Assessment

Our curriculum is mapped against National Curriculum expectations and designed to support pupils to develop a broad range of knowledge, skills and understanding. Assessing the progress that pupils have made against the requirements of the National Curriculum informs future planning.

At Holy Trinity, we monitor the progress and attainment of every pupil carefully to ensure that each child achieves their full potential.

Assessment is an integral part of daily teaching and learning. Children’s work is assessed both informally and formally at appropriate points throughout the year. Teachers use a combination of:

  • Formative assessment – ongoing assessment through questioning, discussion, marking, feedback and observation
  • Summative assessment – more formal assessments and tests used to evaluate attainment at key points

Teachers and support staff continually evaluate progress across all subjects, adapting teaching to meet the needs of individuals and groups. Pupils are also encouraged to take an active role in their learning by reflecting on their achievements and setting personal targets for improvement.


Tracking Progress

We track pupil attainment against the curriculum expectations for each year group, which outline what children are expected to know and be able to do by the end of the academic year. These expectations are shared with staff, pupils and parents and are referred to regularly to ensure clarity and consistency.

Ongoing assessment is supported through our structured system of:

  • ‘Check Its’ – reviewing key knowledge and skills
  • ‘Beat Its’ – applying learning with increasing confidence
  • ‘Prove Its’ – demonstrating secure understanding and mastery

This approach provides clear evidence of children’s understanding and retention of previous learning.


Using Assessment to Support Achievement

Assessment information is carefully analysed by adults during termly Raising Attainment Meetings. This ensures that:

  • Work is appropriately planned and differentiated
  • Gaps in learning are identified quickly
  • Additional support or challenge is provided where needed
  • All pupils are supported to make strong progress

By maintaining high expectations and a responsive approach to assessment, we ensure that every child is supported, challenged and encouraged to succeed.
