At Holy Trinity, we provide engaging, interactive lessons which develop pupils’ linguistic skills while maintaining enthusiasm and enjoyment. Language learning begins in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) through informal sessions, songs, stories and educational games. This learning journey continues progressively throughout pupils’ time at Holy Trinity. From Key Stage 2, the teaching of a modern foreign language becomes statutory. At this stage, pupils develop their understanding of basic grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and listening skills, building the foundations needed for further language study.
Our Intent
Our Spanish curriculum is designed to ensure that pupils:
Develop accurate pronunciation and intonation
Build a secure and progressive vocabulary
Understand basic grammar, including gender, agreement and simple verb forms
Engage in conversations and express ideas confidently
Read and understand short texts
Write simple sentences and phrases from memory
We want children to leave primary school with a strong foundation in Spanish and the confidence to continue language learning at secondary school.
Our Approach
Spanish is taught through engaging, interactive lessons that focus on speaking and listening as the foundation of language learning. Children learn through:

Visual prompts and practical activities
Cultural exploration
Key vocabulary and grammar are revisited regularly to ensure knowledge is embedded and built upon year by year. Lessons are designed to be active, inclusive and enjoyable, encouraging all pupils to participate and take risks in their speaking.
Cultural Understanding
Language learning goes beyond vocabulary and grammar. Pupils explore the traditions, celebrations and daily life of Spanish-speaking countries. They may learn about festivals, food, music and geography, helping them understand and respect different cultures.
Through this cultural awareness, children develop empathy, global awareness and an appreciation of diversity.
Skills for the Future
Learning Spanish supports wider skills development, including memory, listening, problem-solving and confidence in communication. It also strengthens understanding of English grammar and vocabulary.
By the end of Year 6, pupils can understand and respond to spoken and written Spanish, take part in simple conversations, and write short phrases and sentences independently.
